My best advice is... join everything! (and participate)

43 Things is actually a great place to make friends. There’s also Friendster, MySpace, Orkut, Ryze, Hi 5, Xanga, Blogger, Yahoo 360, del.icio.us, StumbleUpon, etc. and if you’re into music: MusicMobs, Last.FM/Audioscrobbler, iTunes Registry, Guzzlefish, SoundFlavor, Upcoming.org, etc. I use all of them to varying degrees, just look for “porcupiny”.
